Teacher 45 had unprotected sex with her 17-year-old male student

A former cheerleading coach from Texas was sentenced to five years’ probation for having a three-month sexual relationship with her 17-year-old male student, whom she said she was helping in his struggle with drug addiction.
Tiffanie Kay Bedinger, aged 45, of Watauga, pleaded guilty last week to improper relations with one of her students at Richland High School.
Bedinger had faced a maximum of 20 years in prison for the felony charge.

‘We consulted with the victim's family and took into consideration all of the available evidence and the facts and circumstances of the case in coming to this decision,’ Melody McDonald, a spokeswoman with the Tarrant County district attorney's office, told theFort Worth Star-Ledger.
‘We felt this was an appropriate resolution to the case.’
Bedinger's attorney, Abe Factor, of Fort Worth, could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

 

The unnamed teenager, who graduated from Richland High School in 2011, was in Bedinger's class his junior and senior years, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
Besides coaching cheerleaders, Bedinger also taught business education at the school from August of 2006 until her resignation in April of 2011, according to Birdville School District records.
Bedinger’s underage paramour told authorities he met the teacher in his sophomore year, and they had grown closer in his junior and senior years. The teen told police and a Child Protective Services caseworker that ‘she was kinda [sic] like my mom.’

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the 45-year-old teacher started sending her student text messages in February of 2011 after he broke up with his girlfriend. Shortly after, the two started seeing each other.
Bedinger was aware, however, that the relationship was wrong because she always advised her 17-year-old boyfriend to delete messages she sent him as a precaution. He told authorities that ‘it was pretty much understood that I was supposed to be trying to protect her and she was supposed to be protecting me, I guess.’
The two had unprotected sex several times at Bedinger’s home in the course of three months, the affidavit stated.
On the nights he would visit his teacher, the 17-year-old would tell his father that he was staying at a friend’s house. On March 5, 2011, the student went with Bedinger on an overnight fishing trip, according to the affidavit.
The student was confronted by his father about having a relationship with Bedinger on March 6, 2011, but the teen denied it, the father told authorities.
Last April, however, the idyll came to an end when the student admitted to his father that he was in a relationship with Bedinger. He then told the 45-year-old that their secret was out, according to court documents.
Bedinger later came clean to the principal of Richland High School about her affair with the student and was asked for her resignation
